Shelter

Our primary function at the Maison Chance shelter is to offer a home to street children and disabled people who are not able to take care of themselves without this assistance. We presently house about 50 people in the shelter.

Free housing is offered to young orphans and former street children who are learning at the Village Chance, or elsewhere, until they are financially autonomous. Similarly, our vocational trainees are sheltered without charge until the completion of their training.

The “Shelter”, as it is now known, offers a truly family living environment. This approach has proved to be beneficial for both groups of occupants. For the disabled, the presence of children helps them restore quicker their sense of balance as they find the energy of children a stimulus for their daily exercises. The children also help them with simple tasks and pushing their wheelchairs. For the orphans and street children, the presence of adults has the added benefit of helping fill a vacuum as they always aspire to have, a full replacement family.

Accommodation at Village Chance.

Starting this year, Maison Chance offers the possibility to wheelchair users to live with their families in an adapted apartment complex (access via ramps, work tables up to a seated person). This means of accommodation is fundamentally different from that proposed in the home. It is proposed against a rent, meaning the rehabilitation and the ability to earn a living.

The Village is a complex combining aspects of community life and privacy. Each has its space, but the doors are often open during the day, as in Vietnam, it is normal to visit neighbors and leave the door open. Meals are often shared between several households.
